The Ministry of Defence is responsible for the safety and security of the country and a major public sector organisation. The Portsmouth Naval Base is home to almost two-thirds of the Royal Navy’s surface ships and provides accommodation to military personnel and other employees at the site.

Challenges

Ensuring the resilience of energy supply to the naval base was of paramount importance for this project. The new substation needed to feed energy to the main pumping station which services critical maritime vessels in the dock.

The other challenge was preserving the heritage of the site. The new substation is housed inside a listed building within the naval base and we had to comply with strict planning permissions in our installation.

Our Solution

In collaboration with KBS Maritime, we designed and installed a new substation that included two switchboards and a transformer. To ensure the least amount of damage to the site, we elevated our installation off the ground to avoid excessive construction on the protected property.

We also installed a new substation outside the building that connects the solar panels in the car park to the network. This installation allows our clients to produce up to 750 kilowatts of solar energy, reducing their demand on the power grid.

Our innovative solutions have helped the MOD to make headways on their Net Zero targets while enhancing their energy resilience.
