Airport engineer lands 40 years of service

An engineer who has helped keep power flowing to Britain’s busiest airports has been recognised by UK Power Networks Services for 40 years’ service.

The specialist energy infrastructure company that runs internal power networks for critical infrastructure, recognised Gary Burn’s unbroken industry service at UK Power Networks’ 40+ Club, which welcomed 63 new members this year.

Gary, 56, from Apuldram, near Chichester, started work in August 1986 as an electrical apprentice for the former British Airports Authority and retained his service after transferring to London Electricity in 1993. He progressed from apprentice to management and built a specialist career in electrical networks for Heathrow, Gatwick, Stansted and other industries.

The client delivery manager, based at Gatwick, said: “No two days are the same, and that’s what makes it such a great place to work. The airport never stands still and neither do we. The people, the client and the breadth of the work make it rewarding. The fabulous team I lead make it enjoyable - don’t write that down, I’ll deny everything!

“The company has backed my progression throughout my career from college and university to where I am today. If you’re willing to put in the effort, there are real opportunities to build your skills, develop your career and work in specialist environments.

“After four decades in the industry, I’m still proud to be part of the airport environment. I can relate to the airport, I feel proud and part of it. After 40 years I feel like an ambassador for the industry,” he added. Despite being a manager, he still works on the frontline when needed.

Gatwick remains a special place for Gary, not least because of a team he’s proud of and the unrivalled view of the runway from his desk. Even when travelling as an air passenger, he still finds himself talking enthusiastically about electrical upgrades – much to his wife’s amusement.

Gary observes that today’s office is worlds away from the one he joined in 1986, unrecognisable from the era of paper files, letters and faxes to instant digital communications.

Weekends are spent pursuing his passion for classic cars. Gary has been a motorsport rally licence holder since he was 18, and he enjoys building and exhibiting classic cars.

Basil Scarsella, chief executive of UK Power Networks, said: “It is always a privilege to celebrate colleagues who have devoted so many years to serving our customers and communities. Their service, skill and commitment have helped keep electricity supplies flowing and we are proud to recognise their outstanding contribution.”
