New axe throwing and archery ranges opened at centre

A charity that empowers young people through outdoor team activities has added archery and axe throwing to its list of activities, thanks to the dedication of our volunteers.

Thirty of our colleagues recently spent time at Longridge Activity Centre, near Marlow, tackling a series of enhancement projects. The centre, which helps young people build skills and friendships through adventurous activities, had been planning improvements following severe flooding in the Marlow area in January 2024.
The volunteers installed new lighting for the climbing wall to enable winter use, built a brand-new archery range, and fitted out an axe throwing centre to ensure safe access for all visitors.

They also refreshed communal areas with new décor and signage. Their efforts were part of the company’s Donate a Day initiative, which gives employees two paid days annually to support charities and community groups.
Amanda Foister, chief executive officer of Longridge Activity Centre, described the event as the most comprehensive and well-organised corporate volunteering effort in the charity’s 18-year history.

She said:

UK Power Networks Services have been absolute legends. Their team has worked tirelessly planning the works over several weeks, and we now have two new land activities – archery and axe throwing – available to more young people year-round. The standard of work has been extraordinary. I can’t think of any organisation that has made a bigger investment of time. These new activities simply wouldn’t have been possible this year without them. We’re incredibly grateful for their energy, enthusiasm and professionalism. Their achievements have blown us away – we expected these projects to take much longer. Massive thanks to everyone involved.

Set in a unique riverside location Longridge Activity Centre offers a wide range of water and land-based activities for young people of all abilities. Since 2007, its mission has been to inspire confidence and broaden horizons through day visits and residential programmes.

Amanda added:

At Longridge, we aim to widen young people’s horizons and foster a positive life attitude. Not everyone thrives in mainstream education, so we provide fun and adventurous activities for all backgrounds. We want to show young people they can achieve great things, both within and beyond education, regardless of ability.

It was a privilege to support the talented team at Longridge Activity Centre. Giving back to the communities we serve is part of our DNA. I’m incredibly proud of our team and the energy and passion they brought to this project, which has delivered fantastic results for our friends at Longridge.
