Sussex steam railway chuff-chuff-chuffed with volunteers
A project to transform the station master’s garden is taking shape at the Bluebell Railway in Uckfield, helped by local power workers. Eight UK Power Networks’ staff helped prepare flower beds for new planting, to create a peaceful spot where the railway charity’s volunteers can take a break. The team gave their time through Donate a Day, which gives employees two days a year to volunteer with local charities and community groups.
Organiser, Valerie Williams, from the finance team at UK Power Networks said: “We had the task of clearing the station master’s garden, which had lain unattended for many years. We re-established the flower beds, dug out stubborn weeds and cut back the hedges. The area will be planted up and turned it into a garden for volunteers. We had a brilliant day. It was great to take part in a team event that supports the heritage railway.”
Charles Melton, chair of the Friends of Sheffield Park Group at The Bluebell Railway, said: “The fantastic work the team did to renovate our rather sorry-looking station master’s garden was transformational, and we are so grateful for the hard work they all put in.”
The Bluebell Railway runs between Sheffield Park and East Grinstead, with stops at Horsted Keynes and Kingscote. It is one of the first preserved heritage lines in the country, with a collection of vintage steam locomotives and carriages. For further information visit www.bluebell-railway.com
