UK Power Networks Services to deliver major power upgrades at the University of Surrey

UK Power Networks Services has been awarded a new contract by the University of Surrey to deliver a series of electrical infrastructure upgrades across its Manor Park campus.

These latest works form part of the university’s continued investment in strengthening the resilience and capacity of its energy network, ensuring it can support future growth and critical digital infrastructure.

The project will see the university’s supply upgraded to 3MVA through the design and installation of a new 11kV ring network across the site. This includes the installation of new high-voltage cabling from the points of connection to on-site substations, alongside the delivery of a fully integrated unit substation incorporating a 315kVA transformer, Ring Main Unit (RMU), Remote Tripping Unit (RTU), and low-voltage distribution. An additional HV metered RMU and metering unit will also be installed, with all associated substations constructed to DNO specifications, including GRP enclosures, concrete bases, and full earthing, bonding, lighting, and small power systems.

Alongside this, UK Power Networks Services is progressing the design and delivery of a new electrical supply to support the university’s data centre upgrade. This solution will take supply from the existing switch room via a new 11kV Schneider CE6 extensible switchgear assembly, feeding two 1500kVA transformers with close-coupled RMUs. The works also include the installation of high and low voltage cabling infrastructure, as well as all necessary earthing systems to ensure compliance and operational reliability.

These projects build on a long-standing relationship between the two organisations, with UK Power Networks Services having supported the university through an operational and maintenance contract for several years.

Together, these upgrades will provide the University of Surrey with a more robust and flexible power network, capable of supporting its expanding campus and increasing reliance on digital infrastructure.

Andrew Lamb, Head of Business Development at UK Power Networks Services said:

“These latest works reflect the strength of our ongoing partnership with the University of Surrey and our shared focus on delivering reliable, future-ready energy infrastructure. By enhancing capacity and supporting critical developments such as the new data centre, these upgrades will play an important role in enabling the university’s continued growth.”

Steve Beckingham, Electrical Engineer at University of Surrey said:

“We’re really pleased to continue our long-standing partnership with UK Power Networks Services on these important upgrades. The improved resilience and increased capacity will play a key role in supporting the university’s future growth, particularly as our digital and research infrastructure continues to expand. It’s been a collaborative effort from the outset, and we appreciate the team’s technical expertise and commitment to delivering a robust solution for the campus.”

He continued, “Throughout the project, the professionalism and clear communication from the team have been outstanding, making this a smooth and well-coordinated experience.”
