Volunteers support Shooters Hill school community garden

UK Power Networks staff have volunteered their time to help restore a primary school’s community vegetable garden in Shooters Hill, south east London.

Employees spent a day at Christ Church, Church of England Primary School helping to repair and reinforce the timber vegetable beds on the school’s community farm, which had become worn and unsafe.

UK Power Networks Services colleague Adam Champney is going even further by looking after the vegetable patches all year round.

The work will allow pupils to continue using the growing space safely throughout the year, supporting hands-on learning about food, sustainability and healthy eating.

Produce grown at the farm is used as part of the school’s meal programme, helping provide children with access to fresh, healthy food.

The project was supported by £300 worth of funding from UK Power Networks’ employee engagement programme, alongside practical help from volunteers who carried out the work once materials were in place.

Those taking part included Antony White, Andy Champney, Emma Kemp, Pete Stupple, Michelle Cooper, Graham Waterson and Mark Taylor.

Emma Kemp, who works in client delivery at UK Power Networks services said:

“This garden is a fantastic resource for the school, so it was really rewarding to help improve it. Knowing the children can safely grow their own food and learn outdoors makes a real difference, and it’s great to be part of something that benefits the local community.”
